6. This Means War

   

For many months now, my church (translation: the theater I go to on Sunday mornings) has had a large display for This Means War prominently placed right across from my favorite Twizzler & Diet Coke dispensary. And I have to admit, the oversized cardboard versions of Chris Pine and Tom Hardy were difficult to ignore.  So, when some girlfriends acquiesced to going to a movie with me this past weekend, I thought this  would be the perfect option.  Although we might not all have the same exact tastes in movies, we are all heterosexual women afterall (as far as I’m aware; I don’t judge).   Not surprisingly, I was correct: This Means War was the perfect movie to see with some girlfriends.

1. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

          

As promised, I started off my year of 50 movies with Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.  I had heard about this movie a while ago and was intrigued.  Although I had never read the le Carre novel upon which the movie is based, I had heard good things from people whose opinions I trust.  Plus, other people seemed to be excited about the movie, and I’m very impressionable.  Then when I saw the trailer a few months ago I became legitimately excited in my own right.  It looked like a good, old-fashioned British spy movie, complete with lots of men in tweed and a quiet, plodding story (i.e., no explosions and you have to use your brain).  And that’s exactly what it was.  Well, not entirely “plodding” exactly, because it was also riveting.  But only after you emerged from an initial haze of pure confusion.  Marc Maron (@marcmaron) recently tweeted—and I’m paraphrasing—that he spent the first half of this movie just trying to figure out what was going on.  I’d say that’s a pretty fair assessment.
